An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn, usually due to a sudden twist or roll.
Athletes in sports with quick direction changes are at higher risk, especially those in soccer, football, tennis, volleyball, and basketball.
Symptoms include pain, swelling, and difficulty walking.
Treatment involves ice, medication, support, and exercises to strengthen and improve balance.
Ankle braces and proper training can help prevent future injuries.
Athletes can return to play once they can perform sport-specific exercises without pain.
Overall, prevention and rehabilitation are key in managing ankle sprains.
